Looks like summer of 1916. They are off to the Somme. The women of Britain are about to be sorry they said anything.

For some reason it reminds me of the Hallmark Hall of Fame production of The Secret Garden where at the end we learn that Dickon died at the Argonne Forest. Which is right up there with the idea that Tom Sawyer probably joined the Confederate Army and spent the rest of his life glorifying the Lost Cause in the "Please stop ruining beloved children's books with realistic historical context."

I expect Sawyer headed for the hills the moment it became clear war isn't fun.

I dunno, Quantrill's Raiders probably would've suited him.

So this proposed radial thing was supposed to enable farmers who lived farther out of town to commute to the market with their produce via railroad (or trolley)? (Probably not too workable for those wanting to sell livestock, unless suitable freight cars were provided.) Did this eventually happen?

It was hoped that farmers would commute into town via trolley with their goods (I'm assuming no livestock, but you never know). Did it ever go through? Spoilers ;)

Re: radials

There were issues getting other jurisdictions' approvals (ahem, Waterloo). But at the end of the day, I believe the Ontario government essentially said, "we never actually said you can do this, and besides, we're preoccupied with the war, so let's put this on hold."

Ironically, this article appeared two days ago, with an original headline of "High speed rail in Waterloo Region? London MP says it's being discussed" (http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/windsor/ontario-government-wants-high-speed-rail-proposal-by-october-mp-says-1.3440700)

High speed rail is kind of our Holy Grail.

Waterloo having, iirc, previously turned down electrification.
