Sword of Shannara:
Earth has been devastated by a nuclear war instigated by five terrorists, and it has taken two million years for the radioactive clouds to once again allow sunlight to reach the surface. Only a handful of humans have survived, while the rest have changed into mutants who roam the radioactive wastelands. In the idyllic land of Montagar, the true ancestors of man – fairies, elves and dwarves – have returned and live in peace. During a celebration of 3,000 years of peace, Delia, queen of the fairies, falls into a trance and leaves the party. Puzzled, the fairies follow her to her home and discover that she has given birth to twin wizards. Avatar, a kind and good wizard, spends much of his boyhood entertaining his mother with beautiful visions, while Blackwolf, a mutant, never visits his mother, but spends his time torturing small animals.
Sword of Shannara:
The Sword of Shannara's events take place 2000 years[15] after an apocalypse has occurred: nuclear holocaust has wiped out most of the planet. During this time, Mankind mutated into several distinct races: Men, Dwarves, Gnomes, and Trolls, all named after creatures from "age-old" myths. Also, the Elves begin to emerge after having been in seclusion and hiding for centuries. The warring that caused the holocaust is referred to as the "Great Wars" throughout the novel. These wars rearranged the planet's geographical attributes and wiped out most life forms on Earth. As a result of the Great Wars, most advanced technology has been lost, thus most of the events in the Shannara series take place in a medieval setting. However, magic is also back into the world, rediscovered after the loss of technology.
PBS is celebrating Julia Child's 100th birthday!

Jasmine's contribution:
If I have only the scantest soupçon of Julia Child’s unabashed kitchen enthusiasm, then I am a better person for it.
Julia taught us how to knead bread, whip egg whites to medium peaks, and fillet fish. Along the way, she thunked dough with a rolling pin, clattered pans as she cleared her work surface, and handled a razor-sharp knife with the same aplomb as Margaret Rutherford’s sword-wielding Miss Marple.
But her influence on me went beyond all that.
