Catch a Falling Star by John Brunner

Foreseeing the doom bearing down on Earth, an astronomer and a companion set out to save their planet. Alas, theirs is a planet of Eloi, and salvation may prove elusive.

Sol passed through the galactic plane from south to north. We're about 67 LY north right now and the northward part of the Sun's vector is about 7 km/s. The Sun may get at far as 250 LY north before heading south again.

Alpha Centauri, in constrast, seems headed towards 800 LY north. I wonder if that sort of thing matters for habitability?
