The chilling prospect of terrorists or other extremists exploiting the Canadian Arctic has attracted the watchful eye of federal security agencies.
They manage to hit many of the usual points you'd expect in an article like this; blurring the lines between protestors, say, and people who are actual threats to Canada, and the invocation of rascally foreigners.
I particularly liked this bit:
The possibility of a terrorist attack in the North is highly unlikely, he said. However, foreign extremists could take advantage of spotty surveillance in the region as a means of entering North America.
"They're not going to attack a small-level target when they can attack a big-scale target. But the big concern has always been the North as an entry point."
It reminded me of an old thread of shwi in which the Axis invades Canada via such an Arctic route, the author being unfamiliar with the geographic and climatic challenges inherent in such a route.
I have not read them but I am pretty sure the comments don't bear reading.
