Neither a horror nor a grim and dark fan, so this is probably at best a 'respect from a safe distance' book for me, no matter how skilled the prose.

I really don't need that much of a downer....

I love this book and teach it every time I teach my fairy tales class. The writing is luminously beautiful, and the intertwining of Snow White with the Persephone and Demeter story is a masterstroke, I think.

It is utterly, utterly grim, though.

I agree a lot of her work is so, so dark but so beautifully written, I could never get enough of it.

I really enjoyed all of the preceding books in the Fairy Tales series -- in fact, I'm in the middle of re-reading Briar Rose now. But I didn't even try this one; everything I'd heard about it made it seem thoroughly unpleasant.
