My nephew had a similar experience with his new dog. It is part labrador. They didn't realize it was part Catahoula till after it had shown it's chops as a canine Houdini by repeatedly escaping from it's pen when they had to go out for errands.
I used to live next door to a large black mongrel dog who enjoyed climbing trees and lurking in hiding until he could WOOF loudly from above head height at unsuspecting passing humans.
