That was before I learned about the evil of archosaurs.

heh.

I actually turned the Eternal Therapsid-Archosaur War into a vignette:

I have still not read much Joan D. Vinge, despite the fact that "View From A Height" is one of my favorite short stories. Perhaps I should rectify that.

The Outcasts of Heaven Belt is excellent. It was first published in Analog, in 1978, but it feels a lot more up to date than that. It's about a STL starship crew who have gone to visit what was supposed to be a very rich system, which was lacking an earthlike planet...only to find that the high tech civilization had fallen apart and was, generations later, still in the process of collapsing, and everyone wanted their ship. It has interesting characters and it's quite good.

I remember my excitement when I found a used copy almost 20 years ago. I imprinted early on Joan Vinge thanks to my mom, and then I found new (to me) stories. To me, she's one of the best writers at novella length.

Sadly, finding Vernor's novels was not rewarding. I really need to stop reading books by my favorite authors' (ex)husbands expecting the same quality.

I have a copy with this cover, whose art I like better than either the above edition or the original Analog.

Although, looking at it now, I see that I may have missed something by being focused on the foreground image. That castle in the background has some towers that are really very.... suggestive, to put it mildly.

Hmpf.

That's my edition, and I never noticed the towers (possibly because my copy was bought used and rather battered).

BTW, I read Snow Queen as a teenager and thought Sparks/Moon was the most romantic couple EVAR. I would probably reconsider that now.

It would be interesting to see how romantic plots are experienced over a person's lifespan.

Some authors learn a more nuanced view of romance over time. Or become jaded instead.

Wow, Joan D. Vinge wrote quite a few movie novelizations:

Tarzan, King of the Apes (1983)
Ladyhawke (1985)
Santa Claus: The Movie (1985)
Willow (1988)
Lost in Space (1998)
Cowboys & Aliens (2011)
47 Ronin (2013)

Whenever I see a good writer's name on a tie-in, I wonder what the book is like. This curiosity leads me to read the novel practically never.

I have heard that Card's novelization of The Abyss is good and I have kind of been wanting to read it. And, since Dark Star is among my favorite films, I might like to see what Foster did with the story. Someday.

Her Ladyhawke novelization was pretty good. A little more view of the characters without breaking from the movie.

The Abyss tie-in

Card's tie in to The Abyss is probably unique in how closely it tied to the movie. He got the script first, and was brought down to be present for filming the movie. There are chapters in the book that give background on each character, relating parts of their earlier lives that aren't in the movie itself that he wrote, and each of the actors was given their chapter to read as background for their characters before the movie started filming. I'm not much of a Card fan normally, but the tie in was really good.

I don't think I ever had any time for Sparks. I think he seemed too much like Edmund Pevensie falling for the Turkish Delight.
