Shall we start a pool on how many male authors were submitted? My entry is 101.

I'll go for 49. On the grounds that last year's 82 was the largest number of submissions they'd ever had.

[livejournal.com profile] coalescent's prediction in your post the other day was pretty accurate, apart from Life After Life which hasn't been submitted. Is there a Margaret Atwood award it could be nominated for, perhaps?

This is roughly double the number of submissions by women compared with last year, which is a good start, but doesn't mean a lot until we see the shortlist.

Has anyone checked this list? Because one of the entries, Valour's Choice, by Tanya Huff, was published in 2000, and therefore not qualified for this award...
As far as I can tell, she didn't have anything published in 2013, so I have no idea what she's doing on this list.

It was published in 2000 in America, but the Clarke Award is for novels published in the UK; according to the ISFDB, that only happened last year with Valor's Choice.

Looks as though Titan Books started publishing this series in the UK in 2013, and the Clarke award rules completely discount publication history outside the UK. So, unless she had a previous UK publisher, it does qualify.

ETA - ah, beaten to it, Martin's post was not there when I started writing this one.

Plus the Clarke does have recent previous for actually recognising such delayed books, as in when it shortlisted Declare a couple of years back (2001 US, 2010 UK).

Interesting....

I'm rooting for Ancillary Justice!

Ancillary Justice was getting a lot of positive comment on the panels at ConFusion last weekend; I'm making it my next to-read book.
