Stopped at the point when the guy who owns the horse the doctor needs carried off the servant girl as payment.

That sounds somewhat different from the original.

In any case, it's a nightmarish story. Surreal and disturbing events follow one another with dreamlike inevitability, and the whole thing seems quite unreal.
