Air Raid
This is based on a pre-WWII poem whose author correctly predicted that civilian targets would be targeted in the war to come. In the poem, a group of women discount warning that the coming war will see them as targets, at least until the bombs begin falling.
At first I thought MacLeish was just dangerously naive about how war worked before WWII but when I got to the part where he describes women who get raped during invasions as them as the occasional woman getting "rumpled" I decided he was deliberately downplaying the realities of war for dramatic purposes.

A bucolic valley in a nation apparently settled by the Spanish and French has the misfortune of attracting the attention of a would-be do-gooder from American and her rich husband. Soon the valley's marvelous road is used in a way never intended, to connect it to the outside world and soon after that, the weak-willing grasping nags of the valley are demanding goods their husbands cannot afford. What possible step could return life to normal and women to a status about that of a mule?
This has not aged well.

American soldiers in WWII Europe become increasingly stressed, particularly that handful who have survived in battle since the early days of the Allied liberation of Europe. Dueling cases of battle fatigue prove a lethal combination.
