Date: 2013-06-29 03:46 pm (UTC)On January 6, 1912, after years of debate on whether the population of New Mexico was fully assimilated into American culture, the United States Congress admitted New Mexico as the 47th state of the Union. The admission of the neighboring State of Arizona on February 14, 1912 completed the contiguous 48 states.
which is consistent with my memory.

Hana's: "I would like to complain about this poll" sounds like a good name for a state, though we'd have to come up with a clever short version." (this devolved into a discussion of what a hole New Mexico is)
Frank had no comment on his choice, New Iran, beyond "I don't think Jesus sharia is different from other sharia."

Which is why the assorted projects to get Inuktitut place-names replacing Norwegian, English, and French place-names has hit the small snag that there are only so many "Big Island"s and "Small Lake"s one can have in a jurisdiction our size before it gets a little useless.

Date: 2013-06-29 10:32 pm (UTC)Hahahaha Texas. NM -- meaning current state / territory then New Mexico -- not AZ -- whipped your ass more than once in your hubristic drive.
Still, that other part then called New Mexico I duely expect to be the first Second in Companion neo Secession with Texas, which is likely to happen within the next 10 years. Unless, of course, the GOP own the Oval Office for the next ten years, thus making secession unnecessary. Why yes, we have been here before. Though it won't be the same. It never is. For instance the War of 1812, the New England states essentially seceded, though they didn't do it formally.

Date: 2013-07-05 10:27 pm (UTC)If Perry doesn't get to be Prez (can you BELIEVE he's trying it again? It went so well last time....) there won't be need to thoughl
Nor was I associating NM with TX at all -- you guys beat those guys just about every time they tried, and the one time they did manage to occupy Santa Fe -- that went so very well for them, didn't it? :P
ETA: this history explains very well where NM's hostility to TX came from. But AZ territory was always confederate in their hearts. It was you guys who stood between them ....
Love, C.

Date: 2013-06-30 09:36 am (UTC)When I worked for an insurance company that merged with the companies in several other states, I discovered easily 30% of my coworkers didn't know if New Mexico was a state or not. "That's... part of Mexico, right?" was a common refrain.
