The 2011 FOGcon will be held March 11-13 at the Holiday Inn Golden Gateway Hotel in San Francisco. Honored Guests include Pat Murphy and Jeff VanderMeer; Ann VanderMeer, editorial Honored Guest; and the late Fritz Leiber, posthumous Honored Guest. This year’s theme is The City in SF/F.
A shiny quatloo to any attendee who mentions Growth, innovation, scaling, and the pace of life in cities.
I'd love to read reports on this. I can't attend FOGcon myself, if only because it's on the wrong side of the border, but it sounds interesting.

I can't thank the anonymous person
Feb. 14th, 2011 05:10 amBut I did the person whose name I knew who also gave me a years subscription. I'm covered up to 2013, and since I should express gratitude in a concrete constructive way, I am willing to do [something] here. I am just not sure what.
I had in mind the sort of thing I could do once a month or perhaps once a week. A review project of some sort?

"And nobody yet has, nobody yet has explained to the American public what they know, and surely they know more than the rest of us know who it is who will be taking the place of Mubarak and no, not, not real enthused about what it is that that's being done on a national level and from DC in regards to understanding all the situation there in Egypt. And, in these areas that are so volatile right now, because obviously it's not just Egypt but the other countries too where we are seeing uprisings, we know that now more than ever, we need strength and sound mind there in the White House. We need to know what it is that America stands for so we know who it is that America will stand with. And, we do not have all that information yet."

You're writing about the future. Perhaps you want to avoid offending people by writing about extrapolations of cultures you are unfamiliar with. Perhaps you want to show that the events that led to your setting were catastrophic enough to cause not just the death of whole nations but whole continents. Maybe you subscribe to the There Can Only Be One! theory of future history cultural development.

How long have humans (and their relatives) had access to boat or purposeful raft technology? I'm not counting things like drifting from Africa to South America somehow as the ancestor(s) of South American monkeys apparently did [1] but deliberate use of technology to cross water.
1: Although wouldn't it cool if we (somehow) learned that crossing was somehow accomplished on purpose and not by accident?
