Given the US had over 2000 nuclear warheads in 1955, and an enormous fleet of bombers parked in western Europe to deliver them[1], there really was no need for magical superbombs, but I suppose actual facts don't play well with the "US as underdog" mythos.

(I wonder how secret the actual size of the US nuclear arsenal was to the general public, mid-50s?)

[1] Which incidentally makes nonsense of the "western Europe unharmed" bit. At the very least, anything remotely resembling an airfield would be plastered.

Pretty much everyone in the 1950s US seems to have thought the US was losing the Cold War.
