There's a connection between John Horne Blackmore, the first Mormon ever elected to Canada's House of Commons, and Orson Scott Card: Blackmore is from Cardston, which was founded by Charles Ora Card, Orson Scott Card's great-grandfather.
Cardston was the first foothold for an until-then-alien religion in Canada so it's not that surprising that someone of that faith born only three years after Card came to Canada would be born near the colony Card founded.
Cardston was also a hotbed of Mormon polygamy and I see the Blackmores have kept that tradition going.
