That cover is almost Bujoldian in it's sheer awfulness. Painted background, photoshopped real rock and what looks like a stuffed toy flamingo at the front, really?

If it weren't I would be reluctantly admiring of the cover artist's peculiar genius, or maybe their particular demons.

"While the above is going on, a Chesare Borja (who is a lot more successful than the Cesare Borgia of our world) unifies Italy."

Cesare Borgia might well have been a lot more successful than the Cesare Borgia of our world. He was unlucky at a crucial moment: He was deathly ill when his father died, and unable to properly rig the resulting papal election.

This book contained one of those scenes I wish I'd never read: how Lord Ciara's revenge on Merelda starts out.

Yes: frightening flamingos aren't normally a thing, except when they try to assemble MegaFlamingozaur. http://i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/01768/Flamingos-620_1768342b.jpg
