Partly because the less comfortable items tend to be avoided in a long series of not-always-conscious decisions, unless nothing else is clean/suitable. So they don't wear out as fast.
Edit: I just can't visualize anyone saying to themselves "Nice day! I think I'll wear my uncomfortable shirt!"
