I joined as Beamjockey. Ello seemed to be art-oriented so, for a short while, I posted my cartoons.

Haven't logged in for months. Just tried it-- and for some reason, as I logged in, Ello made a decision that I was "following" a couple of dozen complete strangers. Why would they do that?

It's true that nobody I know posts much to Ello. So it's not too useful.

Just killed off 28 involuntary "followees," only to find that the "Notification" list seems to be infinitely deep as I scroll down. No idea how many other followees I may have.

Forty. I received a total of forty involuntary followees today. And killed them.

That was pretty much what put me off using Ello. It was like LinkedIn with a truly really creepy pushy agenda. "Of course you should all be friends! All of you! Speak candidly amongst yourselves now, share your intimate thoughts, you're all friends!"

Does anyone use it? I signed up as did a number of my friends, but zero traffic from any of them in months.

I rather like Ello as a platform - granted that it's a bit thin on community. No adverts, no algorithms, and an interface that combines the better points of Facebook and Twitter. I'm making a conscious effort to use it more at the moment, if only to work off my increasing frustration with Twitter.

Or has anyone else here tried Peach?

It's another attempt to do Facebook but without the bits everyone hates. Phones only, which is a barrier, and it's nowhere near the user base it'll need to be worthwhile. Looks like it could work well for a group of a dozen friends, though.

Hmm, thanks. Don't think I'll bother.

Of the social media platforms, LJ in its more vibrant era is my preferred. In other news, two from my Friendslist returned to LJ after a hiatus, so there is hope?

I have an Ello, but it's not got the right vibe for me.

I joined but it was all about art, which, while I like to have illustrations to what I post, photos, drawings, etc. are not the point for me of social media, blogging, journaling, etc. I want intelligent, informed commentary about this and that and the other.

I was checking my "social" folder in email (read: all the announcements I don't read), and surprise, Ello has gone from "Only if you get the right code from the right people", to "PleasepleaseohpleasePLEASE join Ello. We'll be your best friend!"

I deleted the message. I hate it when internet fads beg.

I'm pretty sure the time for "the next Facebook!" is over. Facebook is the next Facebook. New social media platforms for tiny niche user groups might be a thing, but otherwise the social media landscape is pretty full.

I bet that's why some people are trickling back to LJ; it'll never be what it was, but it's becoming apparent what various platforms are variously good for, and LJ's good at things that Facebook/Twitter etc. aren't.
