The Psychocrats are also a factor in Android at Arms; they're suspected / stated to be behind the android project, as I recall.

The cover gives me an instant sense memory of being ten years old or so, but even after reading the review I have no memory of the book at all. This isn't uncommon with Norton's books for me, I'm afraid; I always wanted to like her books more than I did. Something about the particular way she mixed fantasy and science fiction—which I usually enjoy—just wasn't to my taste back then.

I don't know whether I ever saw that cover, but I definitely did art projects like that when I was about ten (we were specifically taught that style on the left, I am pretty sure).

I've seen that style before too, but it's the fella with the jumpsuit and the laser pistol that really triggered the memory for me.

Eastern European artist, IIRC. A striking cover, and very unusual look for a Norton.

I doubt it was intentional, but sexual attraction, however muted or sublimated, seems more fluid in Ice Crown than in most of Norton's work.

The artist was Lazlo Gal.

(I'd been guessing the Dillons until I looked it up.)

The title was instantly familiar, but I don't remember this book at all, either, which is unusual for Norton's books for me.

Perhaps YOU have been mind-wiped? ; )

Suddenly it all makes sense.

Bet the computers can't be destroyed with irrational humor and paradoxes, either.

The computer destruction scene is actually very tense and gripping.

If you're not funning, I think that counts as spoilers. :)

I think this one and The Wraiths of Time were my favorite Norton's when I was an adolescent. I haven't reread either of them in at least 25 years, though, so I don't know what I'd think now. I suspect it was the female main characters that made those two books such favorites.

I know that cover. I know I read the book, but even with your review, I have zero memory of it.

I'm confused about the fact that you say this is a standalone, but it's also "The Psychocrats - book 1".
