If the van was too long, then parking within the lines but pulling forward to not block traffic driving behind him would be optimal. Would only take up two spaces, or one if someone parked across from him with a compact car and didn't need the entire length of a space.

Good point. I can't see enough of the lot in the photo to see if that was an option.

IMO the greatest likelihood is that the driver was just a selfish jerk but I was trying to be charitable.

I think you're right to be charitable. A magical butterfly just landed on my shoulder and provided some context for the photo:

The parking lot is for a mom & pop store. The van belongs to the owners of the store (and its lot). The photo was taken on Sunday, when the store was closed all day. The three cars in the lot are parked there illegally - the owners are overnight guests at the nearby apartment who are skirting the street parking requirements.

This thread makes the butterfly want to cry.

It's the Stanley Park Mall and that building is the LCBO.

Now I have to think of a reason to be charitable toward that butterfly!

Charitable is good. I just have a compulsion to use my vast (they're not vast) spacial relations skills when I see a picture like this.
