FALL

ASCENDING by James Alan Gardner

Another charming adventure from JAG. Oar (from _Expendibles_) returns, now approaching the end of her life as thinking entity. Being Oar, she refuses to give in to fate and being Oar, lack of self-confidence in her ability to find a solution to a problem that every other member of her race failed to solve is not an issue. Great stuff.

THE CURSE OF CHALION by Lois McMaster Bujold

I thought this was quite well written and yet very little of it stays with me. It's a fantasy in a land not unlike Spain, with an interesting religious/magic system. A survivor of imprisonment finds gainful employment only to find himself stuck in a Plot.

LOOK TO WINDWARD by Iain M. Banks (Alternate)

I have bounced off this every single time I have tried to read it.

FIRST LANDING by Robert Zubrin (Alternate)

But -this- piece of crap I finished. I thought that it might have been ghosted by Kevin J. Anderson but nope, apparently Zubrin managed to hit KJA levels of quality on his very first try. Standard lousy man on Mars
SF adventure. Someday I'd like to read a story about competent people on Mars.

[Allow me to recommend Landis' Mars Crossing and Andy Weir's The Martian)

THE CHRONOLITHS by Robert Charles Wilson (Alternate)

Giant war-memorials appear, celebrating the victories of a war that is yet to be fought. This has military and political consequences.

About as upbeat as RCW ever is.

ILLUMINATION by Terry McGarry (Alternate)

I know I read this but I don't seem to have kept my notes.

[The odd thing is I remember where I read it - St Jacobs - but not what the plot was about]

DRAGON & ISSOLA (2-in-1) by Steven Brust (Alternate)

Someone else will have to review these. Brust seems to trigger the same memory processes for me that Zelazny does.

I missed this. Something familiar about the editor's name, though.

OFFERINGS: THE ART OF BROM by Brom (Altiverse)

Missed this. I don't even know who Brom is. Of course, in 1990 I didn't know who Rossetti was, so my ignorance is merely ignorance and not a comment on quality.

SPIDER-MAN: REVENGE OF THE SINISTER SIX by Adam-Troy Castro

No idea.

BATMAN COLLECTED by Chip Kidd & Geoff Spear (Altiverse)

Avoided this.

TAKE A THIEF by Mercedes Lackey

And this.

THE FALL REVOLUTION (3-in-1 of THE STAR FRACTION, THE STONE CANAL and THE SKY ROAD) by Ken MacLeod (Alternate)

The first details the events leading up to the Fall Revolution, in a balkanized UK firmly under the boot of the US/UN. The second is split between events on Earth from the 1970s to the mid-21st century and then some time later on the very capitalist world of New Mars. The third, an odd choice if one is only picking three of the four books in the Fall Revolution series, is a branch universe from an event that went one way in the main universe and the other in this one, in which the barbarians won, although their decendents would no doubt have a problem with being called that.

Enjoyable stuff but too prone to triggering flame wars to be safe to discuss here.

ASHLING by Isobelle Carmody (Alternate)

I missed this.

Brown was the master of the short-short, sometimes spending more on the postage to mail the story to the magazines than he got from selling the story. I find his novels rather variable but this collection is a must for anyone interested in short SF.

ANTRAX by Terry Brooks (Alternate)

And this. I wonder if he's planning a book called SRS? Or F'lu?

TALES FROM EARTHSEA & THE OTHER WIND (2-in-1) by Ursula K. Le Guin
(Alternate)

I missed this.

PRIDE OF KINGS by Judith Tarr (Alternate)

And this.

THE WORLD OF SHANNARA by Terry Brooks & Teresa Patterson (Gift
Catalog)

And this.

PARADOX: THE ART OF STEPHEN YOULL by Stephen Youll (Gift Catalog)

And this.

THE ATLAS OF MIDDLE-EARTH by Karen Wynn Fonstad (Gift Catalog)

And this.

THE ARTHURIAN COMPANION by Phyllis Ann Karr (Gift Catalog)

But I think I own this, if it's the one Chaosium put out years ago. Not a bad starting point for Arthuriana, as I recall.
