The Lost Special (Arthur Conan Doyle)

A detective is stuck with a seemingly impossible to solve mystery: how could a train vanish without a trace from a single tracked route between stations?

Very reminiscent of a Holmes story but not in this form a Holmes story.

That was the plot of the last of the Cummerbach SH tv shows I watched.

I don't think that's the case... it does indeed sound familiar, but I don't recall it from the Moffat show.

Unless it was one of the small vignettes in "The Sign of Three"?

No, it was the one where he "returned from the dead."

"The Empty Hearse," then?

I was planning on rewatching it, so I'll look out for that. Thanks.

So it's not one of the sequels to The Lost World then? Because I was betting it had something to do with Prof Challenger's lost pterodactyl (which was really a baby quetzalcoatlus).

I liked Donald Westlake's take on the idea: KAHAWA.

Written chiefly from the viewpoint of the crooks, of course. A trainload of coffee is stolen from Idi Amin....

Archive.org had a set of five "Railway Mysteries" in this series read by Benedict Cumberbatch up for a while---they're gone now. (I've now asked for their return.) Quite charming!
