I am now contemplating a scenario in which Mr. Card's house burns to the ground because someone in the local fire department is LGBTQ, and he himself is trapped in a car because the police and emergency services have gay members, and must tend his own injuries because there are non-heterosexual medical personnel at the hospital. Although he may be the sort who sneers once he has safely healed.

And I'd really rather not contemplate Mr. Card. At all.

Unfortunately I guess I haven't read enough Banks to get the final panel. Or is it a FUturama reference?

I think the joke is that Banks doesn't get to enjoy his unexpected afterlife, except as an exhibit in a collection of famous authors.
