So the job of killing the census as a source of information is still an ongoing one for the ReformaTories.

This is exactly the sort of article that could attraction toxic comments. Canadians old enough for their expectations to have jelled by the Centennial would have had even less contact with foreign-borns, particularly ones from Asia and Africa, than Americans. I remember the timorous and xenophobic discussions that went on back when we liberalized immigration here.

The debut of Canada's controversial census replacement survey shows there are more foreign-born people in the country than ever before, at a proportion not seen in almost a century.

Here's an interesting little chart.

I wonder why Americans stopped moving here? Is it just the end of the Vietnam War?

I would assume that the end of Vietnam and also the difficulty for people without family there to sponsor them. Since family reunification is given a priority, among other factors, it means that a lone American seeking to immigrate is at a relative disadvantage. I think lone individuals are usually at a disadvantage in immigration.

I don't know when the rules changed, but it is a lot harder, in terms of requirements and bureaucracy, for USians to get permanent residence now than it was in the 1970s.

Obvious point is obvious: the graph is in percentages; just because the percentage of immigrants who are USan has come down doesn't mean that the number of immigrants who are USan has done likewise.

Did the absolute number of US immigrants to Canada decline all that much, or was it swamped on that chart by a surge from Asia (particularly Hong Kong)?

It looks to me like the number of Americans (compared to overall population of America) didn't change, while immigration from Asia grew, meaning that Americans make a smaller piece of the larger pool.

Conspiracy theory: Canadian radicals maneuvered Bush into pursuing a land war in Asia in hopes of provoking resurgence of American immigrants to Canada.

It's not quite clear what that chart is. Is it the percentages of foreign-born people living in Canada, or the percentages of areas of origin for immigrants? Or something else? (I hope you can clarify.)

It also really needs an indication, maybe a parallel chart, of the proportion of Canadian population that it represents.

I just did the Immigration Canada checklist. It appears that without an employment offer letter in hand, Canada does not want me.

All you need is a large sum of money for investment purposes. The doors have been open to investors for a long time.
