Wednesday Night 13th Age

I forgot to post the 4th session but it was straightforward: The group broke into the garum factory, Cota got to wrestle barehanded with a guard dog (not recommended), Blaze handled the night guard and Mari found and rescued Mati, along with a bunch of other kids whose employment at the factory was of varying degrees of voluntary.
That left the aftermath for this session.
The kids who wanted to leave the factory were taken to the cleric Skleros's church. The church elders were less than keen on this opportunity to show their community spirit, at least until Mari paid for cost of taking care of the kids.
Since he had only a couple of hours before work, Cota borrows a cot at the church; this was a free service for which there was an entirely "voluntary" donation. On his way to work then ext morning, Cota notices he is being followed by two guys, clear bent-nose types like Cota, one of whom turns out to be a connected guy named Lump. What their interest in Cota is is not clear and while it is clear they are better at tracking than he is at evading, there's no attempt to corner Cota.
Blaze spends their time following the aristos who provoked the fight in the first session. Since Blaze is too paranoid to keep a home, their sleeping arrangments are determined by whose bed Blaze has talked their way into. Tonight it is a lucky stable book whose name got lost when I discovered a way to close a file on my Playbook without saving the file. Blaze feels ill for reasons that are not clear; they seriously consider whether or not they have been poisoned.
Farouk the mage goes off with Stephan to the Pillar to deal with his sudden nomination as wielder of the staff of great power whose name I neglected to note. This provides a chance for a long discussion of the staff and its rumoured powers. The previous owner died under mysterious circumstances, but since he was buried with usual rites the powers that be must not suspect anything too underhanded. At one point, Farouk is greeted by grumpy superior, who is not pleased that Farouk is in line for the staff. After sneering at Farouk, the superior wanders on his way, no doubt looking for underlings to bully.
A guy named Templeton arrives; he turns out to be a former student who bombed out in third year and who has been given a position as a servant. Templeton has considerable aptitude for boot-licking and is family minded as well; he spends some time angling for a job for his cousin Morris w/ Farouk.
Farouk has an interview with older mage concerning the staff. The ritual to gain position seems trying and potentially dangerous; he will need to buy five healing potions for the ritual and it is recommended he name his next of kin. Farouk will need to be handy for the next 75 hours, and Farouk will need to take quarters w/ the mages.
Farouk is given predecessor's room, which still smells like Old Guy. Farouk examines the room, finds old guy's effects still in place. There is an interesting painting on the wall of a soldier and his dog. No doubt full of symbolism.
Farouk also finds a puzzle box and of course he fiddles with it, although he can't get it open (blew his wisdom roll). Room gets very dark for some reason. This is because somehow it is now night time, even though it was mid day when he entered the room. The moon in the nigh sky looks wrong and after some calculation Farouk determines that this is because itis in the position it was in on the previous night. As well Farouk feels tired and looks unshaven as though he'd been up for a day and more.
The next morning it becomes painfully clear Farouk somehow managed to move himself back in time slightly. How he did this is unclear.
Skleros interviews the kids about the fish factory and the comings and goings of adults here, hoping to get a line on Anatole the missing son of a parishioner. The kids talk about how they are sorted into appropriate groups by their bosses: sorted into pickpockets, workers, other roles by talent. Older, more trusted kids get to handle money. Anatole was part of the crew but the kids are not sure when. Anatole seemed to have been caught doing something bad and was worked hard; he was also "taken out the back" for punishment. Eventually did not return from one of the "taken out the back" sessions and since what's out back is the local bay, the signs not good for his survival. Skleros gets the name of man responsible, a Red Shark named Gutter.
Skleros goes to talk to Blaze since Skleros suspectsBlaze has applicable skills for retrieving Gutter fora frank and open exchange of views. Skleros does not find Blaze so he leaves note for Blaze re job (although I am not sure where he left it).
Mari talks to Mati, who thankes Mari and explains how she got grabbed by a half orc on way to Cota's place. Mati does not know if she was targeted on purpose or if she was just a target of opportunity. Since the Half Orc is one who was recently seen relaxing face down in the bay, no plans for a meeting with him were made. Mati not remember much due to the drugs she was given but she does know she spent the time she was a prisoner scaling lots and lots of fish. Mari treats Mati to an expensive bathhouse session on Mari's dime.
On the way into the spa, Mari spots Declan (her mentor). Declan and Mari have a chat about her previous night's adventures. Declan can't see the money angle in helping the kids and since he is a complete moral void he is utterly baffled why she did what she did or what she is planning on doing. Eventually Mari explains it all as recovering an employee and getting damages for her incovenience.
Declan warns Mari to lay low for a while, since the garum factory and the kids belonged to the Red Sharks. He also suggests it might be a good idea to get the Green Skins on her side, since they hate the Red Sharks. This could be expensive.
As it turns out Declan has a job offer for Mari. He has an item he needs stolen, something that is obviously the staff Farouk is slated to take guardianship of. To make things better, Mari will basically have to tweek the nose of the local mages to get the staff and do this more or less out in the open. I can see no way in which this could go horribly wrong...
The asking price for the heist is a bit of a sticking point. Declan offers to take care of the Red Shark problem for Mari once Mari hands the staff over. Mari for some reason does not see getting the mages as her hunted as a step up from having one of the local gangs after her. Declan sweetens the deal by offering 5000 for the ID a person Mari mentioned in passing who wants to kill Declan. Since this is Blaze, who seems to be a friend of Mari's, she turns this down too. The negotiations end on an uncertain note.
In any case, there's a complication Declan does not know about: in return for his help in a previous session, Mari is obligated to give the next item she takes to the Kid. dum dum dum!
That left the aftermath for this session.
