Is there a way to read documents passively on the Playbook? What I mean is, if on my shell account I use the more command, I can look at a file without worrying that I will change it and of course on the kobo I can read a book without inadvertently calling up a keyboard every time I touch the screen too vigorously. Is there some way to look at a document without automatically being in potential edit mode?

I assume by "documents" you mean in "Docs To Go"? I don't see one, but I just played around with scrolling a lot and wow, you have to touch the screen REALLY vigorously to get the keyboard to pop up.

No matter how hard you press the screen, if you move your finger before lifting it the keyboard won't open. And if the keyboard does open accidentally, you can close it again by pushing the picture of the keyboard in the bottom left before any damage is done.

Oh, wait, I know why you're asking this. Yes, yes, I could picture a cat making the right motions popping open the keyboard and then walking on it.

I see OpenOffice Document Reader for free in appworld, which looks like just a viewer and not an editor, but I'm not sure if it supports MS document formats or just the open standards.

I don't have to touch the screen that hard to get the keyboard to pop up. And in fact, I've done any number of annoying things to documents I was trying to read and I've only had the Playbook a week.

I will check out OpenOffice Document Reader reader, though. I use OO so that should do just fine. Thank you!

Is it possible to set the files to read-only?

I certainly hope there's a read-only mode in there somewhere. But an interface lacking one would not even make the list of top ten user interface blunders, so...

"read passively" seems like perfectly sensible terminology to me. (And I was also bemused that "analogous" flummoxed a salesperson.) I know of a 3d graphics product where zooming and spinning around counts as a change, so managers are scared of taking a look at things to check on progress but then accidentally changing things.
