This is actually two sessions, both combat-heavy. Here's a hint as to how it went:

In the first half of what turned into a running battle, the party did their best to talk their way past a line of demons blocking the way to talk to a Drow named Novenis (sp)? After diplomacy and bluffing failed to work, the mage opted for a fire wall. A close battle followed, during which most of the group's dailies and encounter abilities were used up; oddly hit point-wise, the group was doing OK.

Rather disturbingly, Quinn discovered he was so far from his patron using his abilities burned healing surges.

The battle was interrupted by the appearance of Novenis. The group had been working under the assumption that they were in the deep past and that it could be possible to avert the great distaster and prevent the elf/drow divide. Novenis corrected us on this point. The group is in the present in a bubble universe where the events of umpty thousand years ago are being reenacted so that Novenis can study them.

Once Quinn realized the distance between him and Hastur was just space and not time, he began calling to his great patron, on the grounds that Hastur is generally a trustworthy sort who could be counted on to come in on the side of light and goodness.

Unfortunately, the big disaster involves an event (giant impactor) that the Drow are trying to learn how to recreate so the problem became to find the least violent solution that let everyone walk away without the Drow getting their hands on a doomsday weapon. Actually, the real problem was how to cut a deal with someone who is chaotic evil and of course unless you keep one hand on their throat, you cannot.

Having stalled long enough to get encounters back, violence ensued. So did an amazing series of truly awful rolls for the PCs. Most of the drow fell (as did Quinn, having failed three saves in a row) but Novenis made a break for a portal to Elsewhere. Since the group still has WMDs in bags of holding, Puk tossed a lighted cusser after Novenis [1], which sadly did not pass through the portal but got stuck halfway through.

And then

But since the GM didn't roll damage, I think there's every chance the PCs survived.

1: Actually, he lit it a few rounds into the battle and then spent an astonishing amount of time running around with what amounted to a nuke in one hand. The demon bird made a comment that may mean the cussers are actually dragon eggs and the explosion might be what happens when they hatch....
