He appears have died very suddenly, waiting next to one of the prime mousing locations.

He and his sister turned up on my doorstep in June 1994, very young and cautious about the human; Blotchy being Blotchy, he let his sister explore me first but became friendly as soon as I produced kibble. His sister didn't live long - my neighborhood is very dangerous for ferals) but Blotchy managed to evade the cars. In February 1995, I decided to bring him indoors, where he adapted to the role of store cat almost instantly.

His sister and what happened with younger litters is why I rounded up all the ferals and adopted them out; the death rate among kittens was almost 100%.

He survived the long-term effects of being hit by a car as a kitten (which eventually cost him all his teeth) and the onset of diabetes in 2005 and remained the boss cat, at least in his own mind, right up until the end.

I am far from alone in looking forward to every one of your stories about cats. In my experience, sudden death isn't better or worse than a long illness: it's just different.

He's probably gumming vermin into heart attacks on whatever plane he's found now.

I just went through similar at the end of December, and your cat stories really helped me. I wish I could in any way repay the favour.

Ophelia, Nameless, Nimrod and Tapestry are all in a tight clump on the bed, while Groucho is just wandering around.
