Ian Samuels' WI Civilization had flourished in temperate zones
In discussion with a friend the other day, an
interesting idea for a what-if came up: what if
civilization, instead of flourishing mostly in
tropical and subtropical regions as in OTL, had
thrived in temperate zones. ( Read more... )

QWP: a request for paired SF books
Jul. 7th, 2013 04:51 pm
I could use a bit of advice. I belong to a SF book club for women in the KW area, and for our September book I was think of proposing two books; a classic from pre 1975-ish, and a more modern novel, say after 1995, with some elements in common. So far all I’ve come up with are Bester’s The Demolished Man, and Alex Hughes’ Clean (both feature telepathic cops). I want to give the ladies two or three pairings to choose from, so I’m looking for a source that will help me find other ‘matching’ books, perhaps 2 space operas and 2 time-travel books. The books can’t be too long – it wouldn’t be fair to ask them to read a pair of 600 page doorstops – so I was thinking no longer than about 350 pages.
If you can think of any books off the top of your head, that would be wonderful! If not, do you know of any websites that could help me in my search?
(specifically SF, not fantasy. I missed that)
