"Yes, it has been about three months since our last analysis of Marvel’s “popular” series about the adventures of the most ineffectual heroine since Jane Austen’s Emma and her running crew of vampire strippers, which puts us a solid three issues behind. But rest assured, there’s a reason for this."

I don't remember Jane Austen’s Emma having a running crew of vampire strippers but I do think you could add nightmarish, blood-sucking monsters to the pool of prospective husbands in the Austenverse without actually making things worse for the unfortunate women involved.

There's a thread on shwi about what might have happened had Alaska remained Russian and if the Great War had happened as it did in OTL. Someone raised the possibility of US and Canadian troops invading Alaska to liberate it fro mthe Reds but using Canadian troops seemed to me to be likely to raise the same Monroe Doctrine objections from the US State Department as the proposed Canadian liberation of Saint Pierre and Miquelon during WWII.

There is a possible (although unlikely) compromise, though. There was an ally that could provide troops for an Alsakan intervention that wouldn't be covered by the Monroe Doctrine, one that took part in the anti-Soviet efforts in Asia. They might even make a suitable candidate to administer an Alaskan Mandate. I speak of course of plucky little Japan, the Allied stalwart in the Pacific theatres of WWI, who were rewarded for their efforts in our timeline with the South Pacific Mandate.

The Locus Polls Best New Novel catagory is not intended as a predictor of
future performance but I think it's interesting enough to see who was
hot and popular in the past and what happened to them to justify using this
catagory in the Locus Polls for yet another series of posts about old books.
