Fake Writing Contest Warning
Jun. 15th, 2008 02:13 pmFrom Writer Beware:
"This week, a call for submissions in a SFWA-sponsored contest was posted on Craigslist and FLiXER, promising large cash prizes and publication.
Writers take warning: this contest is a fake."
Update
SFWA has tracked the culprit down:
In response to a cease and desist letter, this person has apologized and says that the posts will be removed from craigslist but he/she doesn't know how to remove them from flixer. He/she claims that he/she will never do it again. SFWA and Writer Beware are monitoring the situation.
I don't know why Capobianco is being so coy about the identity of the person behind the fraud unless the culprit is underage. That might explain some of the odder aspects of the con, like the low fee.
Hmmm. I wonder what would happen if I looked up the address supplied in the con?
Ah, it's the Pacific Gardens apartment building in San Deigo, not something like a mail box. One bedroom units, though, which seems to undermine the young offender idea.
