Right now I freelance in the game and book industries, as a reader of MSes and as an editor. I find I have moments when I am not working. I also find I am drawing a complete blank of how to convince companies that they want to pay me to do stuff I would do anyway.

Any of the freelance editors care to share their wisdom?

I'm afraid I can't come up with anything better than to tell them you can no longer afford do this work for free.

Oh, no company benefits from the free stuff. It's just that if I am awake, I like to be working on something constructive.

It's all about personal contact, and getting people who like your work to recommend you to others. These days, it can also be about being in a company's database. Have a few specialties, so they think of you as the go-to guy for that sort of book. And if you don't hear from people for a while, call them up to chat. Ask them if they can pass your name along.
