I followed the link to your John Varley essay on Tor/Reactor, and I was wondering why you didn't mention Steel Beach, written in 1992. I figured because it was written outside of the dates you were talking about.
Because Varley has two versions of the Eight Worlds, the 13 stories published between 1974 and 1980, and then the ones after 1992. Varley didn't want to go back and reread the early work, so the two continuities differ in ways that are irreconcilable.
(Also, his Hollywood misadventures fall between the two. Post-Hollywood Varley is less fun than pre-)
