I'm hugely enjoying the books, but the mystery of how the rings/rails on Giant work is bewildering.

Tochi Onyebuchi is an author known in ISFDB, but it isn't evident that this is "fantasy", as it may be, except for publisher Macmillan saying that it is. They also say it's "post-colonial" Africa, which is slightly unclear since wherever this is in (West) Africa, the French are still occupying. I suppose that that isn't unheard of. I'm not satisfied either with descriptions that I can call on of "Bambara" people and language, but in that context it appears that "dugulen" means village people, unless I've gone wrong. And the Harmattan is a seasonal wind in West Africa, and not a parallel universe version of Manhattan.
