And sometimes it gives you a K-Mart Amazo, a power-mimicking android with mostly average stats and powers. Sure can hold its breath for a long time, though.
[Later: artificial isn't the same as android]
The golem-like Bit Ilum [1] was created to provide an aging wizard with a durable host-body. AI is a crap shoot even for magically animated creatures, particularly if the creator is in the habit of deranged monologues while crafting host bodies. As soon as it was animated, Bit decided it really didn't want to host the malevolent old coot. One act of defiance later, the wizard's soul was driven out of the creature, never to be seen again [2], leaving Bit Ilum to pursue its own destiny. Unfortunately, Bit Ilum discovered that it had an unfortunate flaw, which is that its sense of me depended on the proximity of beings from whom it could copy personhood. Having been created in an isolated location, it fell quiescent before it could reach the nearest town.
Thousands of years later, Bit Ilum, now a display in a museum, was reanimated as a side-effect of one of those superhero battles that are forever driving up museum insurance rates. Having intervened on the side of the white capes at a crucial moment, it decided that was as good a purpose as any.
Since it was only animate for about half an hour, it does not miss Babylon at all. In any case, the Earth is now crowded enough it probably doesn't have to worry about going back into torpor... but don't send it to deal with a crisis in the middle of the Pacific.

The Life support because it is a magically animated figure with no need to eat or sleep. Power mimicry because the coot wanted it to be able to emulate his powers. Flight because it thought that was really cool and it invested the time to learn that power full time, right after paying the points for "full time person (probably). Sometimes when people shoot at it, it regrets not making invulnerability a full time power.
It can only copy innate or learned powers, not devices.
The reason it hung out with superheroes was because it was a bit worried the kind of person it is is determined by who is around it. With time, though, it came to the conclusion all people have at least the seed of goodness in them, so it need not have been so choosy [3]. Nice to be useful, though.
1: The name means "House of God" in Babylonian. The old coot thought highly of himself.
2: Except for all the times he reappeared to try grand theft Bit Ilum.
3: Oddly, its evil analogue hung out with supervillains and came to the opposite conclusion.
