I thought I had read Jeffty is Five in some anthology or collection. Certainly the title is familiar. But when I googled for a summary, it was not familiar. I suppose I might have forgotten the plot, but that seems unlikely.

And the all time winner of the "What SF story have I read that fucked me up the most" award is on this list: The Screwfly Solution.

Tiptree went on my "Skilled writer. Deserved the win. But I'd like to be able to sleep again, and I have major depression." caution list from that.
