Who are, as the novel makes clear, easily manipulated into joining what they think is a revolutionary cabal.
I’m struck once again by how many oppressed minorities are able to organise together in real life, when the default assumption in fantasy is it’s impossible without some kind of outside organiser - noble or sinister according to the story. Though I guess “don’t trust would-be revolutionary leaders” is at least good anarchist advice.
Oh, a new Frances Hardinge novel! My favorite is A Face Like Glass, but she is an absolute master of the Jigsaw Puzzle Plot and she writes is worth trying.
