If there's one aspect of the 21st century that seems utterly bizarre to me, an old who has been playing TTRPGs since the field was six years old, it's the idea of so many TTRPG gamers being angry with and derisive of the publisher of DnD for regrettable business decisions. I mean, who didn't love it when TSR went after fan sites, published those cool plastic players boxes, or decided not to honour S&T subscriptions after the SPI takeover?

Not to mention putting a (TM) after the word “nazi” on their cardboard minis. (Pedants please note phrasing.)

I have that set, and it's LucasFilm trademarking Nazis, not TSR.

I suppose it was hubris to think my disclaimer would protect me from being nerd-sniped :-)

The fact that they were marketing a game as an Indiana Jones tie-in is its own symptom of a drive to monetize/expand their reach. They didn't try to do a generic swashbuckling 30s-40s adventure game, even though they'd already produced Gangbusters!--they did an Indiana Jones game. They didn't do a submarine warfare wargame--they did a Hunt for Red October game. Like Hasbro/WotC, they were trying to expand their market, and IIRC the games they produced weren't that good.

But not as bizarre or inexplicable as the Dallas TTRPG from SPI

I've seen it in various folk's collections and it's a... role playing-like game inasmuch as you get to play various characters from the show, but you can't "roll your own" without a lot of work on the GM's part.

OTOH, they apparently did an All My Children game.

I hadn't heard of the All My Children game, but it sounds plausible. While not what I'd want to play, I'd think a good world book would be worthwhile to fans just as a quick guide to characters, biographies, and story lines.

I wouldn't expect this would be a lively tabletop RPG genre - but it also wouldn't surprise me a bit to discover I'd missed the release of GURPS Telenovelas.

Here's something I should have posted on one of your OGL threads: a lawyer's opinion of the OGL kerfuffle - no one actually needed the OGL.
