I read through the entire series last year. I won't say I enjoyed it very much, but the third book is probably the best in the series. There's also a novella about Tarrents early life that is practically forgettable.

I feel I should track down the final volume, to see if indeed there’s any way for the humans to survive in an environment so responsive to their imagination and fantasies.

This becomes a plot point of the third volume.

How do the rakh deal with the mutable nature of reality? As locals, they presumably have some natural adaptations that allow them to survive.

They are part of the world so it doesn't react to their unconscious fears and thoughts like it does with humans.

That makes humans rather scary from their point of view - a bunch of inadvertent reality warpers.
