The author seems to like playing off of other people's settings, including Western sf, so I like to think it might be a little more accessible to Western readers. (For instance, among the stories picked for the anime series, one in the first series very obviously picks up from a story in The Cyberiad, and I'm fairly sure one in the second series is inspired by Inverted World.)
