And judging from this:

If global population soars through 10 billion and continues toward 20 billion, we will all be living in gigantic, polluted, diseased slums in the 22nd century - the vision of a Lagos with a population of 150 million will be repeated worldwide.

Not superkeen on people, either.

There's a later version of this paper but you have to subscribe to Sage to see it.

Abstract: The UN data (1950-2010) and projections (both medium and low-fertility variants for 2015-2040) show that fertility rates are already below replacement level in all continents except Africa. In this paper we develop a simple new approach for population projections based on a Improved Rate Equations (IRE) model. Population projections under the (1) Malthusian assumption, (2) an (IRE) model fitting and
extrapolating from actual UN population data up to 2040, and (3) UN projections (low-fertility variant), are compared. The model fits quite well actual data and suggests a world population decline in the 21
st Century. The economic, social and political consequences of this new and global circumstance would be far reaching.

Overpopulation SF

Note that the assumption that seven billion people is overpopulation is somewhat toned down from the earlier version of the post:

So, when does Soylent Green hit the supermarkets?

There should probably be a Martha Adams Random Association Alarmist Theatre warning on that second one.

Waking up to a speech by Rick Perry and then having the CBC's Shift move on into a population bomb article (although the 30 seconds I listened to was about the need for people to have access to birth control rather than the more traditional case for enforcing birth control popbomb people liked in the 1960s).

It seemed to reuse material from this episode but it's not that episode; what I recall hearing was a firm assertion that the world would hit 15 billion in 2100, rather than that being the high estimate.

They reference a UN press release that appears to be this one (pdf).

I don't see any purpose to such remarkable expansion. My thinking
is, as few as three *million* humans everywhere, might very well be
enough to do the business of our human species. If they are (here's
the rub) *quality* humans. Just one in 2,000 presently living.

But at least she's consistent:

Some major population control would be another very good idea. [...] See, "Calhoun's Horrible
Mousery," in Newsweek just three or four decades ago.

John Calhoun, for people who have not heard of him.

I have not read this yet.

Would anyone know which government, past or present, holds the record for having had the largest fraction of humanity within its territory?
