This is old but interesting. From the Brookings Institute.

“Whereas it took 25 years to reduce poverty by half a billion people up to 2005, the same feat was likely achieved in the six years between then and now. Never before have so many people been lifted out of poverty over such a brief period of time,” the authors wrote in the Yale Global Online Magazine.

Within 10 to 15 years, it will be technically possible to produce sustainable and economically viable biodiesel from micro-algae on a large scale. Technological innovations during this period should extend the scale of production by a factor of three, while at the same time reducing production costs by 90%. Two researchers from Wageningen UR (University & Research Centre) believe this to be possible. In their article in Science (published 13 August), they provide a detailed explanation of the route that needs to be taken.

My psychic powers tell me that if the above can in fact be done (something many of the people commenting are skeptical about), any state money financing it will come from Europe and Japan but not Canada.

Unixronin discusses an unsubstantiated rumour that Betelgeuse may be much closer to going boom than was previously realized.

A lot of disclaimers go here, beginning with "I don't trust the source, not least because of how they handle things like how bright SN 2010whatever would be if it happened" "like unixronin, I have not seen any confirmation of this rumour (I will accept a new object as bright as the moon suddenly appearing in the sky)" and "mentioning a rumour is not advocacy."

Also, and I invoke my common law rights to harvest organs from people who panic about the following point even though here I am making it clear they don't need to panic, we're talking "interesting bright light in the sky" here, not "a pulse of electromagnetic radiation so powerful the Earth puffs into a cloud of super-heated volatiles and metals."
