The protagonist sounds a bit like Cas Russell in S.L. Huang's Zero Sum Game and its sequels. I find those books excellent and also gritty but not particularly bleak or nihilistic. Would you say that Rosewater is more bleak and nihilistic than Zero Sum Game, less bleak and nihilistic, or about the same?
