My poor cat Groucho becomes extra shaggy in the winter and as a result has endless trouble with snarls in his coat. And he hates having them combed or trimmed out. Oh, well. Fur's twirled problems.
My brain skipped right over that line. I mean I saw it, and thought it odd without paying attention because it was a post about a cat with matted fur, and I knew a cat once that had that problem, and the only way to deal with it was to bring it to a vet or groomer who could somehow manage to shave the cat down without being shredded, and I thought that wouldn't be good advice on my part because I've got the idea, which might be invalid, that James doesn't have the budget for vets or groomers in a non-life-threatening circumstance.
Barry is a very fluffy cat... and he seems to be in pre-kidney failure. So he can't groom himself properly anymore, resulting in dandruff, tangles, and fur that is both dry and oily at different levels. :(
Does Barry accept brushing? Makali'i, my fluffy part-Persian, loves the brush. Several times a day she jumps onto my bed and whines until I stop work and brush her.
I brush him when he's curled up next to me (which admittedly is very often), but I can't get the tangles out without a furminator or similar, and he doesn't like those.
His fur is about 1.5 inches long right now; it was longer but I have a groomer coming by every four months now. (He did not like the bath, and he did not tolerate the hair dryer, so he was moist and smelled of shampoo for a couple of days.)
Makali'i had a nasty attack of flea eczema a year ago. Her coat was tangled, dirty, and interspersed with bloody raw patches and scabs. (She would NOT let me apply flea meds; I finally managed to dose her, sneaking up on her while she was eating.) I managed to clear all that up, eventually, but it was a long process. It started with a small flea comb, over which I had more control than I did over the brush. I could comb lightly over scabs and avoid raw patches. Perhaps Barry would tolerate flea-comb detangling.
We're experiencing the spring shed as well. Wet food is supposed to be better for the felines, but regurgitation of said food onto the carpeting is a catastrophe.
My cat Stella hates to be brushed, but she it too floofy to avoid snarls. I ended up getting her shaved last summer. She hated the process (she loathes other cats, so I had to get a mobile groomer and help hold her), but she seemed MUCH happier after. I don't know if I will get her shaved every summer. Maybe every couple of years. She enjoyed the brief time as a short hair, as well as the reset on her coat.

So all I picked up was the surface meaning.
Oh. Oh. Oh......
