Black and white photograph of a horse-drawn sleigh in front of the Waterloo County courthouse in winter (1900-1905). Image Citation: Kitchener Public Library. P000259 Waterloo Historical Society Collection.

Snow! Misogyny! Berlin's subway (not the sandwich shop)! Gunshots! Fire! Horses! Prohibition! Beer! A punch-up! And a pretty awesome pie!

"Subway" in this context meant a roadway and a railway crossing at separate grades.

Here's a photo from 1915 titled "Keele St. Subway", showing a rail line crossing over a road in Toronto.

Interestingly, a rail bridge in Bible Hill, NS is still referenced by locals as "the subway".

Thanks! I'd asked a couple of people and no one really seemed to know what it was about. I'll amend the post by linking to your comment.
