A Bad Idea

Shopping today was a mistake.

Is it just me or are people actually becoming worse at navigating their carts in grocery stores? I especially like the person who parked their cart blocking an aisle, then abandoned it.

You're not wrong. I notice every time I'm in the grocery store. I think it just goes along with the "I don't care about anyone but myself" culture. Well, it could just be that they're stupid.

It seems to be dependent on when/where you shop. I stopped shopping at a certain grocery store because of the way the customers behaved. Today I went to my local Loblaws for the first time in a while, and confirmed why I no longer shop there. Carts blocking the aisles, parents with kids at the fast checkout buying 8 items per kid -- and of course the ever-present cell phones...

I should note that the Loblaws I usually shop at has a self-check section that is usually fast, with polite customers.

It's not the crowding of the store. I also shop at Big Land Farms, which is invariably crowded, but people are polite about it even when we don't speak the same language. And they don't try to push their way into the line, either...

Well I think part of it has to do with the day you shop on, I personally prefer to shop on Sunday near store closing (7ish at night) I find shopping on Saturday to be a nightmare (especially today in the morning when the stores are closed tomorrow). It was a totally different experience, though the same store 31 hours off from my regular shopping time.

I experienced this today as well. My local Dominion is normally open 24 hours, but it was closed yesterday and will be closed again tomorrow, so it was packed. While spending 20 minutes in the checkout line, the back of my foot was the recipient of someone playing smash-up derby with her cart who couldn't be bothered to apologize. I said, "no, that's okay, I didn't need that foot," but she didn't turn around. I also received a kidney shot from someone else who wasn't watching where she was going.

Oh, and I think today was the designated shopping day for people in motorized wheelchairs - I almost got hit three times by someone who didn't realize that when the store is crowded, they should probably reduce their speed and go in a straight line...

I've noticed a lot less situational awareness when shopping.

People who come to a dead stop, or drift into the throughway, and then dawdle, or swerve the cart (this is most apparent at the Costco, and Food4Lesses of the world, where aisle are three carts wide) without the least evidence of even thinking there might be someone else in the shop.
