"A Canadian settler hates a tree, regards it as his natural enemy, as something to be destroyed, eradicated, annihilated by all and any means."

Anna Brownell Jameson, Winter Studies and Summer Rambles in Canada (1838)

How 180 or so years can change sentiments for the better, hm?

Probably because they came from places that didnt have trees like those, and humans tend to fear what they dont know.

Or, the darker side is that the Trees were, of course, out to get them.

I notice that the average height in Alpha Flight skews short (only one Sasquatch versus Puck, Wolverine, and Marrina; the others that I can remember seem a bit closer to the average).

Oh, you didn't mean that...

Sounds more Burlew-esque, really...

(Preempting any "Burlew-eqsue dancer" jokes, thankyou.)

Written a century later, R M Patterson's _Dangerous River_ and other books set in the old Northwest Territories, show a real love for the land, the rivers, the trees and the flowers.

Tolkien's dwarves, or at least Durin's folk, carve their hall-pillars to look like trees.

This can be extended as "good entities in Middle-Earth like and value and respect trees and forests"; one way you can tell the Numenoreans are going bad is by the outbreak of indiscriminate logging.

I don't remember the first bit. And Gimli was a bit nervous about forests, IIRC.

Gimli was a bit nervous about Lothlorien and Fangorn, both the abodes of extremely powerful entities he knew almost nothing about. That's no more proof of not liking trees than the hobbits being nervous of the Old Forest.

"Down the centre stalked a double line of towering pillars. They were carved like boles of mighty trees whose boughs upheld the roof with a branching tracery of stone. Their stems were smooth and black, but a red glow was darkly mirrored in their sides. Right across the floor, close to the feet of two huge pillars a great fissure had opened. Out of it a fierce red light came, and now and again, flames licked at the brink and curled about the bases of the columns. Wisps of dark smoke wavered in the hot air."

How did Gimli feel about out-of-fuel 767s?

There's a difference between hating trees and loving axes.

I always wanted to run a fantasy game where one nation of Dwarves wore red plaid shirts and spoke with French accents, liked axes and cutting down trees.

Whereas Swedes have resigned ourselves to live in occupied territory, where we are eternally surrounded by the enemy.

(seriously. I was fifteen before I first saw an actual horizon)
