White Charles (Sarah Monette)

Read by Kate Baker

Period piece: an enthusiast's contribution to a museum proves atypically interesting, leaving the staff of the museum to deal with the ensuing complications. Also, middle class academic learns not to be such a nob to the blue collar staff members. Although I expect he will cut them all dead in public.

I wondered while reading this how often in universes like this academics get ahead by encouraging their more adventurous chums to go poking in long forgotten tombs and libraries. "Here's a bit of chalk, old boy, Let me know how that pentagram thingie works out."

General podcast question - not related to Clarkesworld.
Can you recommend a good podcast that is not story-centric? Something that has interviews, reviews and general SF (or perhaps space & science) related chat, instead of short stories. I'm looking for something I could listen to while doing some other work and that means being able to tune out for a while and not worry I'm missing something crucial.

Some of the Time Traveler Show would qualify, I think.

On the space & science angle, you could do worse than Quirks and Quarks.

Suddenly I am reminded of that scene in The Mummy where the crooked guide runs into the title character and promptly reaches for his collection of Amulets For All Occasions.

Wouldn't he have made a wonderful curator for the collections at Miskatonic U? Better pay, no heavy lifting, and tenure by the next solstice or upon dismissal of an Ancient Elder God, whichever comes first. And with his experience he would immediately keep an eye on any student who arrived fresh from Castle Rock Prep.

Right man for the right job.
