I am not sure of Edmonton's relationship to Alberta, but it has occurred to me that there are several people of interest to me in Austin, and several others from Texas.

On reflection, this is inaccurate, as I know at least one person in Houston.

I'd go with West Berlin.

The most surprising thing in that was... she hasn't read The Magicians?

I've always thought of Austin as Texas's Portland, Oregon, to be honest. But I don't know anything about Edmonton besides the facts that it has a huge mall, and it's way too far north.

It's really not at all like Edmonton. Houston is more like Edmonton than Austin is.

Edmonton sometimes elects liberals, Austin regularly votes for democrats. I assume that was the similarity James was pointing to.

It's an oasis of left-wing civilization and mass transit in an ocean of right-wing Christian fundamentalism.

Houston is my second-favorite city in Texas, with San Antonio a close third.

Do not ever go to any of them between mid-June and the first of November, lest you wither and die.

It's surprising how well even we Canadians can adapt. I lived near there for seven years (College Station).

As an added bonus, Toronto summers don't really seem uncomfortably hot any more. Even Durham, NC summers seemed pleasantly cool.

November in Texas was a fun month. I could have my AC on one day, heat the next, AC the next.
