Really? I would have thought "one or two orders of magnitude less probable than NEO impact." Maybe I need to do more homework.

Well, a near-Earth object will often have hundreds of close encounters with Earth, and fresh long-period comets are much less numerous to begin with.

On the other hand, the hits could be more devastating because of the much larger relative velocity.
