I just went shopping.

Logically, shouldn't a low number of carts in the store's cart depots mean that there's a lot of people in the store? But it doesn't. Tonight there were almost no carts and also almost no people.

Maybe they lock them up at night so they're not stolen?

They'd be inside at the main depot and it was nearly empty.

Maybe they went home with other customers.

It's spring, right? Hereabouts it would mean that homeless people were on the move.

This was the Big Scary Zehrs, which is a bit far from the city core for the homeless.

I was tempted to shout "Bubbles? Are you there?"

Here in north Waterloo, locals steal carts all the time, and dump them in various creeks and ponds. It's absolutely ridiculous and wasteful. I counted four today, during my 5-minute walk to the library.

And almost all the tills were open but there were no lines.

That's a good thing. Right now we've a bit of snow, again, and things are odd.

There's still, even after last week's rains, a couple of mountains of snow in the lots with carts sticking out of them.

Yesterday, lots of people deserting carts next to where they parked because manhandling them even a few more feet thru the snow was too much. (I guess.)

The isles and also the cart docks were pretty empty.

I park in the handicapped spots (have a tag) and it really annoys me when other handicapped people leave their carts in the striped areas. If they can't take it to the cart return, they should leave the cart at the sidewalk and drive up to get the groceries.

I frequently take the abandoned cart in with me, as my cart, unless it has too much of the chrome worn off. If the chrome is chipped/worn, I leave it on the sidewalk and get a better one. I can't push with my left hand so I leave it loosely over the handle and chrome and when the chrome is chipped, I get it in my hand.

You weren't invited to the cart races again.

Carnivorous carts, or else a badly-balanced staff. Any carts running free out in the parking lot?

Nope. It was like the carts had their holidays today.

They haven't yet had their third metamorphosis, and are still in the bicycle stage?

Clearly the bicycle somes AFTER the shopping cart larval phase.

They might have figured that since the store was so empty, today was a good day to take them all for repair and cleaning.

Were any of them scattered about the parking lot?

No, there was a general lack of cart.

Maybe they were off being repainted or having new advertising installed!
